More bad news for Obama

http://www.ppic.org/...

There was bad news out of California today for Barack Obama. A new poll by Public Policy Institute of California, just released, shows Obama leading by 15%. What's even worse, the poll gives Obama just 50% of the vote.

The McCain camp was obviously delighted by these results. One McCain backer who couldn't control his happiness was overheard saying: "I was so sure we would be down 17 points, so to have it 15 is just great."

John McCain even managed to pry himself loose from a Britney Spears commercial to remark that this proves California is in play: "Who would have ever thought that 35% of all of California supports me." This is truly a miracle.

The poll indicated that Obama is the choice of both men and women, but one McCain backer was not dismayed; "There is a lot more than that in an election, and we are confident we will be successful with the other groups."

McCain supporters were also heartened by the report that Obama only had a 2 point lead with whites. "that's hardly significant," said one, and the media people present all heartily agreed, as they slapped high fives.

The worst part of the poll for Obama was the finding that "regardless of who they support, likely voters trust Obama over McCain to handle environmental issues (52% to 28%) and energy policy (51% to 33%)." McCain backers were certain that this greater trust for Obama reinforces the fact that Obama is arrogant, and overconfident, and they couldn't be happier about it.

All in all it seems like another happy day for McCain, as good poll results for them just keep pouring in.

Damn.  We don't get to keep the EV's unless we win by at least 29 points, right?

Re: More bad news for Obama (2.00 / 1)

Well, based on his recent performance, it's been decided that John McCain will be awarded half of any state's electoral votes if he can correctly identify that state's capitol. That should net him twenty, thirty more votes right there.

ignoring polls either good or bad is not an effective strategy IMO.

Re: while the diary is amusing. (none / 0)

People need to calm down, statistical noises right before the convention is standard.  Matter of fact most Americans are busy with other things and the media is going to be focused on the Olympics.  Expect good numbers after the first debate because that is when we can get a feel where the election is at.  In the mean time enjoy the summer, hell Obama is having a great time on the road and McCain isnt!

Re: while the diary is amusing. (2.00 / 4)

Correct.  However, we should also not freak out over a single statistical outlier.  This is why we have sites like Pollster.com and Fivethirtyeight, which aggregate the results of a great many polls together.  That's much more accurate.

The average of all polls is very clearly showing that not only is Obama's support very close to its June peak, and McCain's support among his lowest ever, but the overall trend and the immediate trend are positive for Obama.

We shouldn't get complacent, but let's also not cherry-pick our polls.

Wait, you mean they don't split the electoral votes according to the popular vote in California? Oh, shit! Someone screwed up!

Re: More bad news for Obama (2.00 / 1)

This proves how arrogant Obama is.  Also, it shows that John McCain is extremely principled.  He would have to be to do this WELL even in a state full of communists like California.  A state, incidentally, that McCain will now almost surely win based upon these poll results.

In conclusion, DOOOOOOOM for Obama.

Re: More bad news for Obama (2.00 / 2)

I was concerned enough to donate today, again.  It is the end of the month, after all - we need to make McCain's numbers look extra pathetic.

Re: More bad news for Obama (none / 0)

That's a vey good idea, but you have taken on a very difficult task, because it's nearly impossible to make McCain look even more pathetic.

Re: More bad news for Obama (2.00 / 1)

You forgot to mention that Obama is only doing this well because of SAN FRANCISCO and all things SAN FRANCISCO-RELATED.

by Cincinnatus on Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 03:15:38 PM EST

Re: More bad news for Obama (none / 0)

Yes, it is believed that Obama has near unanimous support in San Francisco, which proves that he is a gay, anarchistic, communist, who may even be black.

Re: More bad news for Obama (none / 0)

Despite the rather labored attempt to be funny, funnily enough Obama should be doing a bit better in CA. Not a lot better but he should be ahead more than 15%.

by ottovbvs on Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 03:47:52 PM EST

lol! Kerry won by 9 (2.00 / 1)

and Obama is polling about 6 points better than Kerry nationally, so in fact 15 is what he should be at.

He should be up 12% (none / 0)

since that's where Hillary was the last time she was polled in California by PPP.

ok this news was so bad I did what I have been putting off, and I just made a $100 donation to the campaign.

if we want him to change Washington and show that lobbyists shouldn't be allowed to buy influence, then we need to do our part too.

will you join me in donating now at the end of the month?
