Thank You, Senator McCain

On this Memorial Day, I would like to convey my gratitude and respect to Senator John McCain.

We disagree on a great deal politically. His overly aggressive foreign policy and somewhat wavering support of the Bush tax cuts are two big issues that come immediately to mind. These issues and others make it difficult for me to contemplate voting for him.

But if anyone has earned the right to respectful consideration of thier offer of service as Commander in Chief, it's John McCain. He paid a huge price for this country.

It's unfortunate the current poltical climate makes many feel they can't acknowledge the service of a member of an opposing political party. It's my hope this short dairy is a very small step toward improving that climate.

He does deserve our respect for his service to this country while his policies on Iraq and SCOTUS might be wrong.

John McCain's service deserves honor and respect, and we of course grant that to him.

Now let's work our asses off to make sure the Democratic nominee becomes President, if for no other reason than to stop John McCain from getting the job.

It is Memorial Day after all - a day to remember those who have put allegiance to their flag and country above their own security and safety. It does make one ponder what they are fighting for - I doubt that those who gave their lives in the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea and even Vietnam (the Bush-led wars require more time and perspective) would be pleased to know that the values for which they fought have been so pillaried by lies, hypocrisy, and the worst of psychological distortion tactics first by the Republicans (1992 - present) and now so capably by the Obama camp.
I don't want Senator McCain to be President either but at least he has a lifetime of protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States.

...and no one earns the right to being considered for the presidency in such a manner. He has my deep respect and gratitude for his service in common with all those who wear the uniform, but that sets no lesser standard of accomplishment for my vote.

Might I suggest you begin treating all our candidates with due respect?

I think many of us have already appreciated McCain for his service in the past. What we are bashing him on is his wrong headed policies which will put more soldiers lives in jeopardy.

Also one needs to have civil courage in addition to military courage. I have seen whistleblowers do things that even people with a military background might hesitate to do out of fear of how they will be ostracized. BUt whistleblowers are rarely recognized.

On this Memorial Day, I would like to thank all the members of VVAW, Vietnam Vets Against War, who taught me in my youth how evil and destructive imperialist war is, and inspired me to fight against the imperialist war machine. Actually this country has paid a huge price for John McCain and his political ambitions. McCain now disgraces U.S. servicemen and servicewomen through his policies of perpetual war. And even if you survive your tour, John McCain doesn't believe you should be guaranteed a full-ride education.
